We saw the high-spirited Italian conductor Carlo Rizzi in the last season with the Residentie Orchestra. This time the opening work is the overture 'Gijsbreght van Aemstel' by the Dutch composer Johannes Verhulst. The opening strains are unmistakably reminiscent of the 'Hebrides Overture' by Mendelssohn. As the music progresses you hear sounds that are more like the Italian Bel Canto of Rossini. Verhulst was a contemporary of Chopin, whose second piano concerto will be played by the Brazilian pianist Eliane Rodrigues.
