'La traviata' is one of Verdi's most intimate opera's. He combined the tragic female role with the most splendid romantic arias and intermezzi that he had ever written. You can hear no sign that it was a rush job. After its premiere in 1853 'La traviata' immediately settled into its top ranking position and never relinquished that status. Perhaps it is the fact that Verdi lived together with his love that forms the basis for the immense dramatic charge. The gripping story, which is based partially on true facts, takes place in Paris. At a party the older courtesan Violetta meets the young Alfredo and falls for his charms. The love is mutual, but Alfredo's father Germont is against the match. The large-scale production by the National Opera of Moldavia has a familiar traditional design combined with fresh and modern performances. Sung in Italian, with Dutch supertitles.
